KPN Vandaag
KPN vandaag is the new portal that replaced the old planet.nl, after this brand was taken off the market by KPN. All users of the old ISP planet.nl were redirected to
www.kpnvandaag.nl.
KPN Vandaag is a highly dynamic and customizable home page like
Netvibes.com and
Igoogle, using widgets that can be added/removed and shuffled around.
After launch it turned out that the speed of loading the home page could be improved. Dirk was asked to do an expert review and come up with recommendations to improve the speed of the site.
Changes involved:
- reducing the number of HTTP requests by combining multiple files into 1 file
- Use of HTTP GZIP compression
- Optimization of HTTP headers(Cache-control, Expires and Last-modified in particular)
- Using multiple host names to allow more simultaneous downloads
- Removal of iframes
